The Detroit Red Wings acquired Alex Debrincat from the Ottawa Senators. Rachel Doerrie breaks down the trade.

After weeks of speculation, the Alex Debrincat saga comes to an end. Ottawa traded the diminutive forward to their divisional rival on Sunday evening. Detroit subsequently signed him to a four-year contract extension that will pay him $7.875 million per season.

In return, Ottawa receives Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango and conditional 1st in 2024 and a 4th in 2024. The return may seem light on its face, but without a contract and unwilling to sign in many places, Debrincat lowered his value. Wingers are the least valuable position in hockey and combined with his contract status and size, expecting a mammoth return would have been a fool's errand.
