Creating Utah's NHL Team in NHL 24

Creating Utah's NHL Team in NHL 24

The Arizona Coyotes relocating to Utah allows us to load up NHL 24 and put our creativity to work to design a team name, logo, and jerseys for them.

We’re kicking things off with the new team name. After researching what animals are associated with the state of Utah, we narrowed it down to three team names.

Utah's state animal is the elk, so naturally, an easy team name we could've gone with was the Utah Elks. That seemed very bland though and a hockey team called "the Elks" doesn't wow you in any way.

The next option was the Utah Stingers, a very close second. Utah is known as the "Beehive State" as it symbolizes a community that helps one another, much like bees do. Utah does have a baseball team called the Salt Lake Bees who play in the Pacific Coast League.

However, our decision was made with a team name that Utah hockey fans are very familiar with, The Utah Golden Eagles.

The name originates from the minor professional hockey team, Salt Lake Golden Eagles. They operated from 1969-1994 and started in the WHL before moving to the CHL in 1974. The organization finished its last ten years playing in the IHL from 1984-1994.

Stu Grimson, Theo Fleury, and TSN's color analyst and a member of their popular sports radio/TV show Overdrive, Jamie McLennan, are a few NHLers who played for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles.

We took inspiration from the Utah Jazz in the NBA when designing their jerseys. The teams' primary colors are yellow, black, and white. Instead of having yellow as the base color on their home jerseys, we did black with yellow for the shoulders, pants, and helmets.

The away jerseys essentially reverse the color scheme of the home jerseys but with white as the base and we gave them some sharp black gloves with yellow trim for the gloves.

Their alternate jersey is a play-off the Utah Jazz's purple jerseys. We had to try to jazz up their uniform, so we gave them white gloves, a bit of yellow trim on the top, and some snazzy purple chrome helmets.

We also paid homage to their state animal by having the alternate jersey have an Elk as the logo.

What do we think? Do we like the name and Utah going back to the Golden Eagles? And how do we feel about the jersey design?
