Canadian center Chris Tierney, who turns 31 on July 1, has signed a one-year contract with Ambrì-Piotta, the National League club announced via social media on Friday. The contract is reportedly for one year plus an option.
“Dear fans, I’m very happy to join the biancoblu family,” Tierney began in the video, referring to the club’s colors of white and blue. “I hope to see you soon at the Gottardo Arena. Forza Ambrì!”
Taken in the second round, 55th overall, by the San Jose Sharks in 2012, Tierney played in 649 NHL regular-season games between 2014 and 2024 with the Sharks, Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens and New Jersey Devils, recording 248 points and 135 penalty minutes. He also played in 40 playoff games, all with San Jose, where he recorded 12 additional points and was a member of the 2016 team that advanced to the Stanley Cup final.
Tierney spent last season in the KHL with Belarusian club Dinamo Minsk and recorded 28 points in 71 regular-season and playoff games.
Tierney joins an Ambrì-Piotta squad that has finished anywhere between eighth and 12th in the National League over the past six seasons, last reaching the quarterfinals in 2019. Last season, the team had Czech winger Dominik Kubalík, but he signed with EV Zug last month.
In addition to Tierney, Ambrì-Piotta has under contract for next season former NHLers Tim Heed, Chris DiDomenico and goaltender Gilles Senn.
