Belgian-born Canadian defenseman Sean Day, 26, has signed a two-year contract with HV71, the SHL club announced on Tuesday.

“I’m really looking forward to coming to Jönköping and HV71,” said Day. “On the ice, I see my skating and playmaking as my strengths and hope I can capitalize on that on the big rink. In addition, I hope to contribute with a winning mentality and know that I’m coming to a team that is ready to win.”

Day was born in Leuven, Belgium but lived in Singapore, Canada and the United States as a child and played minor hockey in suburban Detroit. Day played junior hockey in the OHL for the Mississauga Steelheads, Windsor Spitfires and Kingston Frontenacs, and was drafted in the third round, 81st overall, by the New York Rangers in 2016.

Between 2018 and 2024, Day played almost entirely in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack and Syracuse Crunch and also played two NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021-22 season.

Despite being born in Europe, this will be his first time playing there.

“In Sean, we get a defenseman who maintains a high standard all over the ice,” said HV71 GM Chris Abbott. “He is extremely strong on skates and confident with the puck and will be a great asset for us both offensively and defensively. Sean is at an age where he is still developing as a hockey player and comes here with an attitude of making both the team and himself better every day.”

Day joins a rebuilding HV71 team that also includes ex-NHLers Tanner Kero, Mattias Tedenby and Henrik Borgström. It also includes NHL prospects Oscar Fisker Mølgaard and goaltender Hugo Alnefelt, a former teammate in Syracuse.
