Pavel Dorofeyev’s elite scoring breakout has sparked a looming financial crisis in Vegas, leaving the cap-strapped Golden Knights vulnerable to predatory rival bids for their restricted superstar.
The Vegas Golden Knights are getting set to fight for another Stanley Cup against the Carolina Hurricanes. However, their biggest challenge of the year might actually arrive on July 1.
Russian winger Pavel Dorofeyev has transformed into an absolute superstar over the last two seasons. He had a sensational 37-goal regular season and a dominant playoff run where he currently sits tied for the NHL lead with 10 postseason goals. But as a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights, his massive breakout has created a terrifying financial reality for management.
Vegas is facing their usual severe salary cap crunch. Even if they utilize long-term injured reserve space, they have roughly $12 million to $13 million in available room, with massive pieces like defenseman Rasmus Andersson left to re-sign.
Because of that tight window, other front offices could be eyeing Dorofeyev as the premier offer sheet target of the summer. Especially with how ruthless Vegas has been. Teams around the NHL could see this as a way to get back at them.
With very few elite goal-scorers expected to actually hit the unrestricted free agent market. A young, 25-year-old sniper coming off back-to-back 35-plus goal seasons is exactly the type of player a rising team with cap space would weaponize an offer sheet to acquire.
If an aggressive team steps up with a long-term offer in the $7.5 million to $9 million range, it puts Vegas in a completely impossible position. Matching the contract would completely handcuff their ability to fill out the rest of the roster. The only silver lining is that Vegas would get draft pick compensation. However, it'd be extremely tough to replace what Dorofeyev brings to their lineup.
Vegas will almost certainly try to lock him down before the July 1 deadline hits, but what if Dorofeyev decides to wait and see what the rest of the league is willing to pay him? The Golden Knights are going to be extremely vulnerable to an offer sheet.
