Swedish winger Oscar Möller, 35, announced his retirement on Monday via the internet channels of his last club, Skellefteå AIK.
“As many surely already know, I will not play hockey anymore,” his statement began. “It's now been a year and a half since I last played and I thought I'd take the opportunity to say a few things.”
Möller missed the entire 2023-24 season with exhaustion syndrome, but he had hoped to return to the ice this season.
“That’s the plan,” Möller said in an on-ice interview during Skellefteå’s SHL title celebrations this past spring. “I have a rehabilitation plan to follow, then we’ll see what the future has in store.”
Möller went overseas at age 17 and played junior hockey for the WHL’s Chilliwack Bruins. He was a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2007 and he played 87 NHL regular-season games and one playoff game with the Kings between 2008 and 2011, recording 26 points and 22 penalty minutes.
From 2011 to 2023, Möller played almost continuously with Skellefteå – he spent two seasons with the KHL’s Ak Bars Kazan from 2014 to 2016. In 12 SHL seasons, he played 550 regular-season and playoff games, scoring 220 goals and added 205 assists for 425 points. He was Skellefteå’s captain from 2019 to 2023.
Internationally, Möller represented Sweden at two IIHF World Junior Championships, two World Championships and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
After thanking the fans, coaches, teammates and his family, Möller concluded his retirement announcement by saying, “To all young athletes: Don’t be too hard on yourself – have fun doing your best. Not every game can be perfect.”
