The Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s roster for a five-team tournament this weekend in Imatra, Finland is certainly a deep one. Of the 24 players, 18 have already been drafted by NHL clubs and almost all have played at least some professional hockey in either the SHL or HockeyAllsvenskan.
Players on the roster who are having noteworthy seasons in Sweden include defensemen Axel Sandin-Pellikka (Detroit Red Wings), Rasmus Bergqvist (Montreal Canadiens) and Theo Lindstein (St. Louis Blues) and forwards David Edstrom (Nashville Predators), Herman Träff (New Jersey Devils), Oscar Vuollet (Carolina Hurricanes) and projected 2025 first-rounder Victor Eklund.
“This is our last tournament before we have to send a squad to the World Junior Championship in Ottawa,” said head coach Magnus Hävelid. “It is pleasing to see in Swedish hockey that there are always new young players coming up in our highest leagues, which increases the competition for places at the upcoming World Juniors.”
Notable players who were with the Swedish team at this year's World Junior Summer Showcase but are not on this team are Tom Willander (Vancouver Canucks) and Felux Unger Sörum (Carolina), who both play in North America but should be available for the World Juniors.
