As Vancouver faces a potential franchise reset, Elias Pettersson’s massive contract and inconsistent play land him on the trade block, sparking high-stakes speculation ahead of the offseason.
The offseason rumour mill is already moving, and Elias Pettersson finds himself right in the middle of it, again.
The Vancouver Canucks forward has landed on Sportsnet insider Nick Kypreos’ latest NHL Trade Bait board, which at the very least signals there is some real noise building around the situation in Vancouver.
It is still early, but the sense around the team feels like things could be heading toward a reset of some kind. New management is in place, and there has been growing frustration in the background as the Canucks try to figure out their next direction.
Moving a player like Pettersson would obviously be a massive decision.
He is in the second year of an eight-year, $92.8 million contract carrying an $11.6 million cap hit. Any team taking him on would be committing to that deal through 2032, which immediately shrinks the number of realistic trade partners.
There is also a no-movement clause set to kick in next season, giving him significant control over where any potential deal could go. That alone makes this a complicated situation to even explore.
On the ice, his play has been a bit inconsistent since signing the extension. There have been stretches where he looks every bit like a top-line centers and others where the production and impact dip a little below that level.
That is what keeps him in this kind of conversation. Elite centers rarely become available, and even with the contract and situation attached, teams around the league will at least be paying attention.
Nothing is close at this point, but just being on that list is enough to make this one of the more interesting storylines heading into the summer.
