Switzerland named its provisional roster for this year’s IIHF World Championship on Monday. It contains 14 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders.
Among them are five NHLers – Nino Niederreiter of the Winnipeg Jets, Philipp Kurashev of the Chicago Blackhawks and three members of the New Jersey Devils – Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler and goaltender Akira Schmid. It does not include Timo Meier, who expressed interest in going but had to opt out when his shoulder injury required surgery.
This will be the first World Championship for Schmid as well as Sven Jung, Thierry Bader and Ken Jäger. At the other end of the spectrum, it will be the 19th World Championship for 40-year-old forward Andres Ambühl, which is a record for the top division. Ambühl’s 131 games played is also a record that he will add to this year.
The rest of the roster plays in Switzerland’s National League. It includes three members of the league champion ZSC Lions from Zurich, including former NHL defenseman Dean Kukan, but not forward Denis Malgin, who suffered a knee injury in the seventh game of the finals against Lausanne.
With 24 players named, they all won't get into game action and some could still be pushed out to make room for new arrivals. According to SwissHockeyNews.ch, Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators “is presumed and expected” to join the team.
Here is the roster that coach Patrick Fischer will take with him to Prague:
