Noah Steen’s overtime heroics secured Norway's first-ever tournament medal, extending Canada’s podium drought to three years after a late-game comeback fell short in a stunning defensive collapse.
Team Canada has suffered back-to-back upsets at the 2026 IIHF World Hockey Championship. After losing to Finland in the semifinals, they followed it up with a loss to Norway in the bronze medal game.
Norway took a 2-0 lead and held it for most of the game until Canada fought back late in the third period to tie it at 2-2. Both goals came from Robert Thomas in the final minute and a half, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, with just over six minutes remaining, Canada broke in on a two-on-one with Mark Scheifele and Macklin Celebrini, but a miscommunication spoiled the rush. The puck wrapped around the boards, where Tampa Bay Lightning forward Noah Steen collected it and raced up ice to create a two-on-one for Norway. Steen beat Jet Greaves over the shoulder to win the game.
The celebration for Norway was something special. It marked the country's first-ever medal at the World Hockey Championship.
As for Canada, it's another disappointing finish. They have now gone three straight years without winning a medal at the tournament.
