The original training camp roster had 28 players and it went up to 30 with a couple of late additions, but on Wednesday, Switzerland announced the list of 26 that they’re brining to Ottawa for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. Only 25 can be registered to play in the tournament.
Players on the list that have already been drafted by NHL clubs include goaltender Christian Kirsch (San Jose Sharks), defenseman Leon Muggli (Washington Capitals) and Basile Sansonnens (Vancouver Canucks) and forward Rico Gredig (New York Rangers). It also includes defenseman Daniil Ustinkov, who was somewhat surprisingly not drafted last summer.
All players were born in 2005 or 2006 except for 17-year-old forward Lars Steiner, who plays for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the QMJHL and 15-year-old forward Jonah Neuenschwander of EHC Biel-Bienne. Neuenschwander made news in November by becoming the youngest player to ever record a point in the top-tier National League. He played in five National League games before being added to Switzerland’s training camp roster, after the original roster had already been announced. The 6-foot-3 winger then played in both of Switzerland’s pre-tournament games and obviously showed enough to make the cut.
Jonah’s older brother, 18-year-old Elijah Neuenschwander of Fribourg-Gottéron, is also on the team as a goaltender. The roster also includes twin brothers Rafael and Simon Meier of EHC Kloten and the Penticton Vees, respectively.
Switzerland opens its tournament on Thursday against Czechia.
