Comparing NCAA Hockey Programs to College Football Programs

The NCAA has so many different storylines across all of its sports, but you can always draw comparisons across sports with different programs. Some recruit and develop the most pro talent; some have been dominant in recent history, and some programs have a long history with shortcomings as of late. 

This will go over NCAA hockey schools and what one-to-one comparison they have with college football programs; it’s impossible to make it a 100-percent accurate comparison, but if you squint your eyes a little, you’ll be able to see it through. 

Denver hockey and Georgia football share a remarkably similar history, starting with recent dominance: both’re modern dynasties built on elite recruiting, strong coaching, and constant championship expectations. Denver owns the most NCAA men’s hockey titles and has remained a national powerhouse with head coach David Carle across multiple eras, much like Georgia’s rise from historic powerhouse to dominant modern program under Kirby Smart. 

Both programs combine tradition with current success rather than relying only on past accomplishments. Players expect to compete for championships every season, and anything short of deep postseason runs feels disappointing. Denver’s consistency in the Frozen Four mirrors Georgia’s regular appearances in the College Football Playoff. If you were to look at pure championships, Georgia won back-to-back in 2021 and 2022, and they’ve been a consistent playoff team under Smart. For Denver, they won in 2026, 2024, 2022, and 2018, just showing how elite the program has been over the last 10 years. 

Michigan hockey and Notre Dame football are both among the most prestigious programs in their respective sports. Michigan has a long history of success, including nine NCAA championships, while Notre Dame has one of the most recognizable traditions in college football. Both programs have strong national followings, elite recruiting, and high expectations every season, and without skipping over it, they’ve both failed to win the national championship in the 2000’s and on. Their success is not limited to one specific era, as both have remained relevant across generations.

 Another similarity is that their names carry significant weight nationally; a game involving either program attracts attention regardless of the opponent. While Notre Dame football has a larger overall national profile, Michigan hockey occupies a similarly elite position within college hockey. You can also point to the amount of pro talent both programs can produce, and with NIL becoming more important for programs, these two schools will continue to benefit from it, as they stand as two of the wealthiest programs in their respective sports.

Notre Dame hockey and Florida State football are comparable because both experienced major conference success before a massive recent decline. Notre Dame won the Big 10 tournament in both 2018 and 2019, but its conference performance took a nose dive afterwards, eventually falling to 4–19–1 in Big 10 play in 2024-25. 

The decline continued in 2025-26, when Notre Dame finished just 9–23–5 overall and at the bottom of the Big Ten. Florida State followed an even more dramatic pattern. The Seminoles went 8–0 in ACC play in 2023 and won the conference, but dropped to 5-7 overall in 2025 after going 2–10 in 2024. Both programs went from conference champions to struggling teams within only a few seasons, making their recent trajectories unusually similar. 

Quinnipiac hockey and Indiana football are linked by their recent rise from non-powerhouse to championship-level programs. Quinnipiac built steadily over many years, reaching national championship games before finally winning the NCAA title in 2023. Indiana’s football breakthrough followed a similar storyline, winning in its first national championship in 2026 after decades without any success, and being the laughing stock of the Big 10 for a while. 

Neither program has the history of established bluebloods, making their achievements especially notable. Both go to show how strong leadership, player development, and modern program building can challenge long-standing, elite programs. Both of these schools have seen success without the highest-rated recruits and with older rosters. Famously, after winning the national championship, Indiana head coach pointed out that he did it with almost all three-star recruits, something unseen in the college football landscape. As both programs stand today, they’re expected to be in the conversation to win it all due to their culture and recent success.
