Boasting record-breaking attendance and championship caliber facilities, Utica University’s powerhouse hockey program proves the Pioneers possess top tier infrastructure while promoting players to professional teams.
Utica University does things right! According to their athletics page, the Pioneers have led Division III Hockey in home attendance at Adirondack Bank Center since the 2006-07 season. It holds a holds a capacity of 3,999 fans. The school invested in their building since program's founding in 2001, constructing locker rooms, storage, and a training room.

They were the primarily affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks until 2021 when they joined the New Jersey Devils. The most notable additions were a weight room, video room and sound system.
Clearly, the NCAA values the facility. It has been the home of three Division III Championships in the past decade, including the most last two. Utica played on home ice during their lone title game appearance, a 2-1 overtime loss to Hobart College in 2025. The following go around, the Pioneers came up short during their quarterfinal match against University of Wisconsin-Stout.
On the ice, Gary Heenan has guided Utica as the Pioneers' sole Head Coach. He holds a 416-193-55 record and this fall will be Heenan's 25th in Utica. Under him, the Pioneers have not had a losing season since 2009. Some of Heenan's alumni are making names for themselves at the professional level.
Tim Coffman was a two year captain for Coach Heenan from 2010-12. Since then, he has taken his continuing career worldwide. Coffman made stops in, Slovakia, Germany Switzerland, and the Netherlands before his latest with Austria's EK Zell am See. The team announced he would not be returning for 2026-27. Coffman also was a member of the Alaska Aces' final ECHL squad before their relocation to the Maine Mariners in 2017.

He led the team last year with 74 penalty minutes across 69 games. Last, but certainly not least, Mike Leone spent part of his collegiate journey playing in the same building he now visits as the Rochester Americans' Head Coach.
While the 2027 Division III Frozen Four's location has not been announced, Utica University remains a top contender to both host and play for a championship.
