Following his appointment during the 2024 offseason, 21 players entered the transfer portal. While some turnover is expected with a change behind the bench, the Wildcats saw unprecedented movement. Between commitment changes, graduations and transfers, Northern Michigan had just four returners out of 30 players in 2024-25. With that new look roster, the Wildcats posted a program worst 5-27-2 record. Just over half of them were replaced by inbound transfers, resulting in another young group. Despite hopes for improvement, the Wildcats went a staggering 3-29-2. 14 more new players arrived ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. After three summers of massive upheaval, it begs the question: Why are players consistently leaving Northern Michigan in droves? "}},{"id":"KyYZWcoJB0","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"That answer appears to be the coaching led by Shyiak himself. In his ten seasons as a Division I Head Coach between Anchorage and Northern Michigan, has not had a single winning season. Player retention, or lack thereof, is wreaking havoc on the Wildcats' program. When a team is repeatedly losing a third to over half its players, roster cohesion is hard to come by. This all boils down to recruiting issues, which Shyiak acknowledged ahead of Northern Michigan's 50th Anniversary Season."}},{"id":"08GGXJMKm3","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"\"We've built [the roster] with the players that we love, and that want to be here for the right reasons,\" Shyiak said. \"We've challenged our recruiting staff to revamp what we needed to revamp, and we're better in those areas, and it puts us in a way more competitive situation.\""}},{"id":"uB2sUODX8v","type":"embed","data":{"service":"youtube","source":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TkfkwdU1z4","embed":"https://www.youtube.com/embed/1TkfkwdU1z4","width":580,"height":320,"caption":"","meta":{"title":"YouTube","description":"Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.","image":{"url":"https://www.youtube.com/img/desktop/yt_1200.png","type":"png"}}}},{"id":"qoEzxA5VfR","type":"paragraph","data":{"text":"As the head coach, the buck ultimately stops with Shyiak when it comes to the on ice product. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) is a hard nosed, defense oriented, in your face college hockey conference. In the pair of campaigns under Shyiak’s leadership, top performers including Tobias Pitka or Jakub Altrichter have departed once they've hit their ceilings.
