The Pioneers won their 11th national title in 2026, which is the most in college hockey history. In recent years, they’ve also won in 2024 and 2022, but what keeps them consistently in the race to win it all?
Even when the program doesn’t win the championship, they still put themselves in a position to be in the mix. In 2025, the program reached its 20th Frozen Four appearance, and they’ve reached the Frozen Four six out of their last eight NCAA tournament appearances.
The biggest factor in their success is head coach David Carle. Since becoming head coach in 2018, Carle has led the Pioneers to championships, established himself as a top coach in college sports, not just hockey, and has the highest winning percentage of a coach in program history.

Carle has proven to be an elite talent developer as well, including multiple All-Americans. In 2025, defenseman Zeev Buium and forward Jack Devine were both named first-team All-Americans, with Buium earning the honor for the second consecutive year. Devine tore up the AHL last year and will be in the running to make the Florida Panthers this September. And for Buium, he was traded this past year in a package for one of the best defensemen in modern history, Quinn Hughes, going to show the value Buium brings to an NHL franchise.
