After a 20-year career in the NHL, Iginla underwent hip replacement surgery a few years ago. Complications as a result of the surgery as well as some medications arose, which have impacted his energy, weight and speech.

Francis added that Iginla has been tested and has met with numerous medical professionals for over a year to get a clearer idea of what the 49-year-old is dealing with.

Concerns for Iginla's health circulated around social media by fans over the past week after a short clip from Amazon Prime's "Hometown Giants" series revealed Iginla's condition had noticeably changed. The show follows the WHL's Vancouver Giants, the team which Iginla's son, Joe, plays for.

Jarome's son Tij was selected sixth overall by the Utah Mammoth in 2024, while the Flames drafted Joe in June. His daughter, Jade, was drafted this summer by PWHL Hamilton.

Nearly 16 of Iginla's 20 NHL seasons were spent with the Flames, where he became the franchise's all-time leader in games played (1,219), goals (525) and points (1,095). He reached the 50-goal mark twice and had 90-plus points on three occasions in his tenure in Calgary.

Iginla was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the midst of the 2012-13 season and went on to spend parts of the next four years between the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings.

On the international stage, Iginla captured two gold medals at the Olympics with Canada in 2002 and 2010, notably assisting on Sidney Crosby's golden goal in Vancouver.
