Rod Brind'Amour won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes as a player and now, as a coach. That sparked debate about whether he should be a Hall of Famer, but can we combine his playing and coaching careers?
Prior to Rod Brind'Amour, there were exactly three men in NHL history to captain and coach the same NHL team to a Stanley Cup championship.
The other guys – Toe Blake with the Montreal Canadiens, Cooney Weiland with the Boston Bruins and Hap Day with the Toronto Maple Leafs – did that roughly a bazillion years ago.
It has inspired a lot of debate as to whether 'Rod the Bod' belongs alongside Blake, Weiland and Day in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Well, the problem is, the way it's set up now, Brind'Amour has to either be inducted as a player or a builder, and you can't combine his accomplishments.
All of Blake, Day and Weiland were Hall of Fame players, but Brind'Amour hasn't been deemed to be in that status yet. And as a coach, he has a long way to go. But he could very well get there.
