The 2028 NHL draft is four drafts away. Four of them. So it's probably wildly early to suggest that 15-year-old Maddox Schultz from Regina will be the No. 1 overall pick that far down the road.
But...here we are. Schultz is undoubtedly the next big thing, a kid who played most of the season as a 14-year-old in Saskatchewan's under-18 league and dominated.
On Sunday, he scored in overtime to lead the Regina Pat Canadians to the Telus Cup, which is the under-18 national championship in Canada. He also dominated Saskatchewan's under-18 league, despite turning 15 in mid-March.
Schultz did not apply for exceptional status to play full-time in the WHL next season, but the Regina Pats have the first pick and will take him. That means he'll be able to play up to 34 games for the Pats next season and continue to dominate the under-18 league again.
