It's only the first year of Kirill Kaprizov's massive eight-year extension but the 29-year-old has already proven his worth, and could take home some hardware to further validate Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin's investment.

Over the past six seasons, Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov has established himself as one of hockey's premier goal scorers.

He's produced at least 40 goals in four of the last five years, and he was on pace for 60 in the one season he missed that mark before an injury sidelined him for half of the season (25 goals in 41 games in 2024-25).

Despite his consistency and remarkable production, the one piece of hardware that's eluded him is the Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy.

However, with the way Kaprizov has started this season, he's one of the odds-on favorites to take home the award. In 10 games, the 29-year-old has 11 goals – the most of any NHLer – as well as 17 points, tying him for fifth in league scoring.

Kaprizov's current shooting percentage of 32.4 percent is nearly double his career average of 16.8 percent is almost certainly unsustainable, but this start has at least put him well on track to surpass his career high of 47 goals. If he gets into the 50s, Kaprizov could produce enough to win the first of what may turn out to be multiple goal-scoring titles.

Kaprizov's success this season has quieted those who squawked when he signed an eight-year, $136-million extension worth $17 million per season. It was a major raise from his previous $9-million cap hit, but in Year One of this historic deal, this already looks like fair value at worst.

There was an understandable amount of sticker shock, but seeing extensions signed this summer like Anaheim Ducks youngster Leo Carlsson did, doesn't Kaprizov's deal look worthwhile?

The financial landscape has rapidly changed across the NHL, and there will be more big-money contracts handed out over the next few seasons that will stun more than a few observers of the game.

Although, while most other GMs are betting on potential, Wild GM Bill Guerin was fortunate enough to put this financial trust in a player that was already established as a star in the league. That puts this competitive team at a significant advantage.

The only metric the Wild care about is winning a Stanley Cup championship, but if Kaprizov continues elevating his goal-scoring game, Minnesota is going to be extremely dangerous. The Russian winger definitely looks in peak form, and on a terrific Wild team, there's no reason to think the former fifth-round pick will slow down.

There are plenty of others who have gotten off to hot starts like Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisatil, Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, and Kyle Connor of the Winnipeg Jets, but Kaprizov has the resume and the early-season surge in goals that make it easy to believe he'll be challenging for the 'Rocket' at season's end.
