In this edition of The Hockey News Morning Skate, Eric Cruikshank and Michael Traikos break down Evan Bouchard's torrid offensive pace with the Edmonton Oilers, Kyle Connor's late game-winning goal over the Colorado Avalanche, and more.
Welcome to The Hockey News Morning Skate, where we give a quick recap of all the action from the NHL every weekday morning so you stay up to date.
Six teams hit the ice across three games in the NHL last night, headlined by the Edmonton Oilers' matchup against the team that eliminated them in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, the Anaheim Ducks.
Let's run through the biggest storylines that emerged from last night's slate of action, and make sure to check out the video version of this story above.
Wilson Leads Capitals Over Penguins
While it was Alexander Ovechkin's final home opener of his career, it was Tom Wilson that led the Washington Capitals with a goal and two assists to secure a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The 32-year-old now has four points in three games and is tied with linemate Pierre-Luc Dubois for the team lead in scoring. Wilson is coming off consecutive 30-goal, 60-point seasons and could be in line for another major offensive campaign.
Connor's Late-Game Heroics Powers Jets Past Avalanche
With just over a minute remaining in the third period of a tie game between the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche, Kyle Connor stepped up with a huge wrist shot that beat Mackenzie Blackwood, sealing a 3-2 win. He now has five goals and seven points in four games, leading the Jets in both categories.
In unfortunate news for Winnipeg, Josh Morrissey sustained an upper-body injury late in the first period of this matchup. He came out for a short shift to start the second period but did not return after that. Morrissey has been a key offensive contributor for the Jets throughout his career, and any absence will be devastating for their competitive hopes.
Bouchard Stays Hot For Oilers
It was evident that the Oilers took their first-round exit to the Ducks personally. Facing a 2-0 deficit in the first period, the Oilers scored five unanswered goals in the second to cruise past Anaheim with a 5-2 win. The NHL's leading goal-scorer is now Evan Bouchard (6) after the defenseman potted two in this contest.
Bouchard also leads the league in even strength points (9). While he's undoubtedly a product of the high-scoring environment he plays in alongside Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, the 26-year-old is on an incredible offensive pace to kick off the season.
