The Florida Panthers suffered a catastrophic blow last season when star center Aleksander Barkov missed the year with a knee injury. But in Florida's second game this year, Barkov suffered another major leg injury. What does this new Barkov injury mean for Florida's playoff chances this season?
The Florida Panthers’ chances of three-peating as Stanley Cup champions last season essentially went down the tube when captain and superstar center Aleksander Barkov suffered a season-ending right knee injury in practice.
No NHL team can thrive when its leader and best player is out for the entire year, and that proved true when Florida failed to make the playoffs without Barkov to lean on.
And the worst fears of Panthers fans came true Friday when, in Florida’s second game of the 2026-27 regular season, Barkov suffered a left leg injury against the San Jose Sharks.
Panthers coach Paul Maurice told the media that Barkov’s new injury was unrelated to the knee injury he suffered last year, but that was little consolation, given that Florida is placing Barkov on long-term injury reserve (LTIR), meaning he’ll miss a minimum of 10 games.
However, before Panthers fans breathe a huge sigh of relief that Barkov’s injury may not be as bad as they feared, Maurice said Saturday that the full extent of the injury won’t be known until early this coming week. So Florida GM Bill Zito is still hoping for the best for his team’s best player. The hockey gods and the injury bug still haven't made it clear what Barkov’s fate will be this year.
Now, in a best-case scenario, Barkov returns at the end of this month and helps push the Panthers back into the playoffs this season. The 31-year-old is a positive force at both ends of the ice, and there’s really no replacing the skill set that Barkov brings to the table.
If he is out for the season, Florida will be devastated. That said, if Zito has Barkov’s full $10-million-per-season salary cap space to play with, we can definitely see the Panthers stepping to the plate and making a blockbuster-caliber trade to give Florida a fighting chance to be a playoff team once again.
For instance, if the Detroit Red Wings haven’t traded former captain Dylan Larkin by the time Barkov’s health status becomes clear, would Larkin accept a trade to Florida? You have to think the chances are pretty high. Larkin could go somewhere he can hide, and the Panthers would get a high-end center who can replace the offense they'd lose with a season-ending injury to Barkov.
Otherwise, if the news on Barkov is positive and he’ll be back by November or December, the Panthers should be able to stay afloat until he returns. Florida has enough depth to sustain them through a short-term Barkov injury, but make no mistake: in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Division, the Panthers will face massive pressure to keep up with the Joneses and ensure the rest of the Atlantic doesn’t leave them in the dust.
Indeed, by season’s end, the difference between making and missing the playoffs could be only a few standings points, and Florida can’t afford to slip down the Atlantic standings.
This is a heck of a lot of drama for Panthers fans to deal with this early in the season, but the stakes are sky-high for Florida, and Barkov’s unfortunate luck has put the Panthers in triage mode at a time they should be ramping up to challenge for the top spot in the Atlantic. Nobody wants to see a superstar betrayed by their body for one season, let alone multiple seasons.
Thus, we’re all obviously hoping for the best for Barkov, but Zito and the Panthers now have to prepare for the worst. Florida has to hope this injury sidelines Barkov only briefly, but if the news is bad and Barkov misses more than a couple of months, the Panthers are unlikely to thrive this season.
That’s not something Florida or anyone wants, but the injury bug can be cruel. And losing Barkov for a second consecutive full season would be catastrophic for a Panthers franchise that has already been through the worst-case scenario with its key competitor.
