As the Anaheim Ducks' offseason gets going, there is a lot to be hopeful for. The team has a lot of really good, young talent on the roster, and the future seems bright. But the status of long-time goalie John Gibson has come into play recently, and there have been rumors that he may want out of Anaheim.

Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff has reported in the past that Gibson wanted out of Anaheim after some tough seasons for the team. But now he is saying that Gibson has said that he won't play another game for the Ducks.

If this is true, it's a bit of a sting for the Anaheim fans that have supported Gibson throughout his career. He started with the team back in 2014 and has basically been their starting goaltender since.

Gibson has had some down years lately, but that is also in part due to the poor defense that the Ducks have put in front of him. The team hasn't made the postseason since 2018 when they were swept in the first round, so you can understand any frustrations that Gibson may hold. But there is a better way to go about things.

If the Ducks do trade Gibson, the first logical choice could be the Pittsburgh Penguins. Gibson is from Pittsburgh, so it makes sense, but the team did just re-sign goalie Tristan Jarry to a new deal, so it remains a question mark if they would go all-in to get Gibson.

Gibson still has four years left on his deal at about $6.4 million a season, so it's a decently hefty price tag. But now it's starting to look like this is the season for the Ducks to make a big move and trade away Gibson.

No matter what direction the Ducks go, they need to deal with this Gibson situation. Either make him understand that he is the starter going forward or accommodate his request and move on. Anaheim has plans to contend this season, so they can either do that with or without the services of their long-time goaltender.
