Could Gibson be on the move?
Since 2014, John Gibson has been at the forefront of the Anaheim Ducks goaltending situation. There was a point where some around the game looked at him as one of the best in the business but his numbers have fallen off of late and it seems the goalie may be ready to move on from Southern California.
Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff talked about how Gibson has let the team know that he is ready for a change of scenery. The Ducks are about to enter a rebuild and just because he is open to a change doesn't mean that he wants to leave Anaheim. But the losing over the last few years has waned on him and it may be time.
One team that consistently gets mentioned with Gibson is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Seravalli again mentions them as a possibility for the veteran goalie. Gibson is a native of Pittsburgh so the fit makes sense. Additionally, he would make sense as a replacement for Tristan Jarry with the Pens.
It would be a dream come true for Gibson to suit up in the yellow and black but there are hurdles that remain. Gibson still has multiple years left on his deal and a cap hit of $6.4 million each year. Would the Penguins agree to that? Or would Anaheim have to eat some of that money to move him?
The price for Gibson will be high as Anaheim doesn't have to move him. He's still only 29-years-old and is good enough to start in the NHL. You could argue that his dip in numbers is only because the defenses that have played in front of him have been almost historically bad.
Gibson's future with the Ducks remains up in the air. But one thing is for sure, teams will call on the netminder and maybe this is the summer that Anaheim pulls the trigger. It'll be fascinating to see how this all plays out.
