The Bruins benched their star player against the Senators.
During the Boston Bruins' last contest against the Ottawa Senators, head coach Joe Sacco benched Brad Marchand during overtime.
Marchand was among the Bruins on the ice when Senators forward Josh Norris tied the game up with 12 seconds left at 5-5. No. 63 was also the player defending Norris when he got his shot off.
Following the game, Sacco briefly explained why Marchand was not on the ice during overtime.
"No, he wasn't hurt. No, no," Sacco said. The Bruins' bench boss also confirmed that it was a coach's decision to have him sit.
With Marchand being one of the Bruins' best players and their captain, it is undoubtedly significant that he was sat during overtime. This is especially so with this specific game impacting the wild card standings.
Marchand will now look to bounce back after being benched from here. In 47 games this season, the 36-year-old has 16 goals, 35 points, and a minus-6 rating.
