The Bruins choked away an important game against the Senators.

The Bruins choked away an important game against the Senators.

The Boston Bruins suffered a rough 6-5 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. With this, the Senators now have the same number of points as the Bruins and have two games in hand.

Let's discuss three takeaways from the Bruins' brutal loss now.

Bruins Choke At End Of Third Period, Lose Shootout

The Bruins are well-known for throwing away late leads, and that trend continued against the Senators. The Bruins were up 5-3 before the Senators pulled the goalie, and they threw it all away during the final minutes. Senators blueliner Nick Jensen made it a 5-4 game at the 16:47 mark of the third, and then Josh Norris tied it up with just 12 seconds left.

The Bruins had several chances to put the game away while the Senators' net was empty, but they couldn't get it done. In the end, they got burned because of it, and the Senators were able to steal this game in the shootout.

    Swayman Has Solid Game

While some might be quick to point the finger at Jeremy Swayman for the Bruins' collapse, the Anchorage, Alaska native had a solid game. The Senators did not make his night easy, as Swayman saved 39 out of Ottawa's 44 shots. Even with their 5-3 lead, the Bruins were outplayed for much of this contest, as they had just 28 shots during it.

Swayman made several key stops against the Senators, and the score could have been far worse for Boston if he wasn't on his game.

Vinni Lettieri Scores First As A Bruin

Vinni Lettieri scored his first goal as a Bruin in this contest. The Minnesota native received a nice feed in front by Justin Brazeau, and he fired it home.

Lettieri was recently recalled to the Bruins' lineup, so getting this goal was big for him. Perhaps it will help his chances of sticking around on the NHL roster longer.
