Former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Irwin announced his retirement back in November. However, he will now be returning to the ice.

Irwin has been named to Team Canada's roster for the Spengler Cup. He will now be a solid veteran for Canada's blueline as they look to win the tournament for the first time since 2019.

In 461 career NHL games split between the San Jose Sharks, Bruins, Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and Washington Capitals, Irwin had 25 goals, 93 points, and 719 hits.

Irwin played in two games as a Bruin during the 2015-16 season, where he had zero points and a minus-5 rating. He spent the majority of that season with the Providence Bruins, posting five goals and 30 points in 64 games.
