The Boston Bruins are now just 49 days away from their season opener against the Washington Capitals. Due to this, now feels like the right time to look at each player who has worn No. 49 during the Bruins' history.

In total, eight players have sported No. 49 for the Bruins. When noting that it is a bit of an obscure number, it is not necessarily surprising that it isn't the most popular in Boston's history. Although this is the case, a former Bruin did put together a 100-point season while wearing No. 49.

Let's now dive into each Bruin who wore No. 49.

    Shayne Stevenson (1990-91 to 1991-92)

The first player to wear No. 49 for the Bruins was forward Shayne Stevenson. He was selected by the Bruins with the 17th overall pick of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, but his time with the Original Six club was short. In 19 games with the Bruins over two seasons from 1990-91 to 1991-92, he recorded one assist, 28 penalty minutes, and a minus-3 rating.

Stevenson's time with the Bruins ended when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft. From there, he played his final eight NHL games with the Bolts in 1992-93, posting one assist and a minus-5 rating.

    Joe Juneau, C (1991-92 to 1993-94)

Joe Juneau would be the next player to rock No. 49 with the Bruins, and he undoubtedly had success while doing so. The 1988 fourth-round pick was a star during his three-year stint with the Bruins, as he posted 51 goals, 142 assists, and 193 points in 161 games. He most notably set career highs with 32 goals, 70 assists, and 102 points in 84 games with Boston in 1992-93.

Yet, Juneau's time as a Bruin did not last very long after his career year, as he was traded to the Capitals for Al Iafrate during the 1993-94 season. During his three years as a Bruin, Juneau averaged over a point per game in each season.

    Jeff Serowik, D (1994-95)

The next Bruin to wear No. 49 was defenseman Jeff Serowik during the 1994-95 season. However, he did not wear for very long, as he played in just one NHL game for the club that season. During it, he recorded zero points and a plus-1 rating.

Following his one season as a Bruin, Serowik did not play again at the NHL level until the 1998-99 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This would end up being his final year in professional hockey.

    Johnathan Aiken, D (1999-00)

Johanathan Aiken would be the next Bruin to sport No. 49, and like Serowik, it was for a short period of time. Aiken, who was selected eighth overall by the Bruins in 1996, played in just three games for Boston during the 1999-00 season. During them, he had zero points and a minus-3 rating.

Following this, Aiken did not play again at the NHL level until the 2003-04 season with the Chicago Blackhawks. During that campaign, he had one assist, 70 penalty minutes, and a minus-1 rating. This would be the last time Aiken played in the NHL.

    Matt Lashoff, D (2006-07 to 2008-09)

Matt Lashoff was another former Bruins first-round pick who wore No. 49 for the club. In 46 games with the Bruins from 2006-07 to 2008-09, Lashoff recorded one goal, eight assists, and a minus-7 rating.

Lashoff's time with the Bruins ended during the 2008-09 season when he was traded to the Lightning in the deal that brought Mark Recchi to Boston. This move benefited the Bruins tremendously, as Recchi was a key part of Boston's 2011 Stanley Cup-winning team.

    Rich Peverley, C/RW (2010-11 to 2012-13)

Rich Peverley would be the next Bruin to rock No. 49, and his tenure in Boston is certainly remembered. The Kingston, Ontario native was acquired by the Bruins from the Atlanta Thrashers during the 2010-11 season. He memorably put together a strong post-season for the Bruins in 2011 after this, posting four goals and 12 points in 25 games.

Peverley went on to have a nice three-year tenure with the Bruins, as he recorded 21 goals, 67 points, and a plus-10 rating in 127 games with the club.

    Max Jones, LW (2024-25)

Max Jones is the last player who has worn No. 49 for the Bruins. The Bruins signed the gritty winger to a two-year, $2 million contract this past off-season, but the fit was simply not there. Jones played in just seven games for Boston last season, where he had zero points, eight penalty minutes, and a minus-4 rating. He also played in 38 AHL games with the Providence Bruins last season, recording 13 goals and 21 points in 38 games.

Jones' time with the Bruins organization ended when he and Trent Frederic were traded to the Edmonton Oilers leading up to the 2025 NHL trade deadline.

Bruins Miss Out On Interesting Potential Target Bruins Miss Out On Interesting Potential Target The Boston Bruins have added many new players to their roster this off-season as they continue their retool. While this is the case, there is no question that they would benefit by bringing in at least one more scoring winger before the season is here.
