Should the Bruins extend this goalie?
The Boston Bruins defeated the Nashville Predators by a 6-0 final score on Thursday night.
While the offense stepped up big time for Boston in this contest, goaltender Michael DiPietro was the team's biggest star. The 27-year-old netminder put together an outstanding 28-save shutout for the Bruins.
This was just the latest strong game from DiPietro for Boston. He was very good in his previous start, too, as he stopped 26 out of 28 shots against the Anaheim Ducks on Oct. 16.
Due to his excellent play, DiPietro now has a 2-1-0 record, a 1.69 goals-against average, and a .941 save percentage in three games this season for Boston. This is after he had a 34-8-1 record, a 1.91 goals-against average, and a .930 save percentage in 45 games for the Providence Bruins in 2025-26. He was also named the AHL's best goalie of the year for the second straight campaign last season.
With how well DiPietro is playing early on this season, he is already making a serious case for a contract extension. The 2017 third-round pick is currently in the final season of his contract and can hit the market next summer as an unrestricted free agent. However, if he continues to thrive as the Bruins' backup as the season rolls on, they would be wise to lock him up to an extension.
DiPietro's rise has been a great story. He blossomed into an AHL star goalie after the Bruins acquired him from the Vancouver Canucks during the 2022-23 season and is now showing that he undoubtedly belongs in the NHL. It will be interesting to see if he can continue to perform like this. If he does, it would not be shocking if the Bruins work hard to lock him up to a new deal.
