BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins' stars lifted the team to a 4-3 shootout win against the Dallas Stars on Monday; David Pastrnak scored the tying goal late in regulation, Charlie McAvoy scored the winning shootout goal and Jeremy Swayman made 43 saves, plus eight more in the shootout.

However, Boston's fourth line laid the foundation with two goals, including Justin Brazeau's first career goal in his NHL debut.

The 26-year-old forward signed a two-year, two-way contract Monday morning after spending this season on an AHL contract in Providence. With Jakub Lauko injured (upper body) and Oskar Steen waived on Sunday, Brazeau received an opportunity and immediately made the most of it.

"We feel 'Steener' has given us everything he possibly could," Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said before the game. "It's just, you know, when you're not winning, you make changes."

The Bruins entered Monday's matchup on a four-game losing skid, and the fourth line made up of three guys who didn't even make the team out of training camp set the tone.

Anthony Richard connected with Jesper Boqvist to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead four minutes into the contest, and just 28 seconds after going down 2-1 early in the second period, Trent Frederic and Boqvist set up Brazeau at the net front to tie it 2-2 at 1:32.

"I kind of blacked out, honestly," Brazeau said. "[Richard] asked me where it went and I said I had no idea. I just shot it and heard the crowd go crazy, so that's obviously a good feeling."

Said Boqvist: "Couldn't happen to a better guy. We're all so happy for him. He's been working really hard so it's great to see."

Brazeau had 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 49 games with AHL Providence this season. Montgomery described him as a "puck possession guy" who plays heavy. At 6-5, 245 pounds, Brazeau showed -- at least in one play -- that he can be more than just a physical fourth line player.

Brazeau became the first Bruins player to score in his NHL debut since Marc McLaughlin on March 31, 2022. At 26 years, 17 days old, he became the seventh-oldest Bruin to score in his NHL debut.

With the Bruins about to embark on a Western Canada road trip, Brazeau will have more opportunities to make his mark on the team. For now, he's taking in the whirlwind 24 hours that saw him go from longtime minor-leaguer to NHL goal-scorer.

"It's a cool feeling," Brazeau said. "It's been a long time coming for me. I've worked hard to get here, so to see that, it kind of comes full circle and feels really good."
