The Boston Bruins will have plenty of decisions to make during training camp this year. The Original Six club has brought in several new forwards, so there is going to be a lot of competition to make the NHL roster.
Among the Bruins' newcomers on offense are Viktor Arvidsson, Sean Kuraly, Tanner Jeannot, and Michael Eyssimont. These four are expected to have spots on the Bruins' opening night roster. However, they also brought in two intriguing players in Matej Blummel and Alex Steeves, who could also compete for jobs on the NHL roster.
With the Bruins bringing in so many new forwards, it might be hard for some of their prospects to make the NHL club. Georgii Merkulov is one specific prospect who has the potential to be negatively impacted by the Bruins' off-season moves this year.
Merkulov, 24, has consistently been one of the Providence Bruins' top players over the last few years. This remained the case this past season, as he recorded 15 goals and 54 points in 59 games. This was after he scored 30 goals and had 65 points in 67 games with Providence in 2023-24. Thus, there is no question that Merkulov has offensive upside, but the Bruins may have too many forwards for him to be on their opening night roster.
However, if Merkulov stands out during the pre-season, he could make a case for himself to be on Boston's roster. He will need to outperform youngsters like Fraser Minten and Matthew Poitras to improve his chances. Showing improvement with his defensive game, in particular, would help Merkulov's odds of earning a spot in Boston's bottom six.
Nevertheless, it will be fascinating to see if Merkulov can put together a big training camp and make the Bruins' roster. It will be a challenging task for the Ryazan, Russia native, but time will tell if he can get it done.
