The Boston Bruins netminder is being kept away from the team as he deals with an illness. Brandon Bussi was called up to back up Linus Ullmark against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.

Jeremy Swayman will be inactive for the first time this season due to an illness. The 25-year-old Boston Bruins goalie was slated to back up Linus Ullmark against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, but Boston is keeping him away from the team as he recovers.

Former Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask, 36, joined his former team during Thursday’s morning skate, but will not be returning to action.

“We will call up a goalie to back up tonight,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “But unfortunately, it’s not going to be Tuukka. Tuukka was good out there, wasn’t he? He hasn’t worked out in two years, he said.”

Instead, the Bruins recalled Brandon Bussi from AHL Providence to serve as the back up. Bussi, 25, backstopped the Bruins to a 3-0 shutout against the New York Rangers in the first preseason game of the year on Sept. 24. He’s posted a .917 save percentage and 2.58 goals against average in 12 games with AHL Providence this season.

Swayman, meanwhile, boasts the second-best save percentage in the NHL (.932) and third-best goals against average (2.08). His status for Saturday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes will be worth monitoring.
