The Bruins should look to change this before the start of the season.
NHL.com recently revealed it's latest Boston Bruins projected lineup for next season. Overall, it has a pretty interesting look.
NHL.com has newcomer JJ Peterka playing on the first line with Pavel Zacha and David Pastrnak. Marat Khusnutdinov was moved up to the Bruins' second line with Elias Lindholm and Morgan Geekie. For their third line, they have top prospect James Hagens on a line with Casey Mittelstadt and Fraser Minten. Finally, for their fourth line, they rightfully have Tanner Jeannot, Sean Kuraly, and Mark Kastelic playing together.
On defense, they have last year's breakout blueliner Jonathan Aspirot on their top pairing with Charlie McAvoy. They then have newcomer Will Borgen on their second pairing with Hampus Lindholm. And finally, they see Connor Clifton playing on their bottom pairing with Nikita Zadorov.
Overall, these are all realistic potential lines for the Bruins. However, this projected lineup also features a pretty significant red flag.
The current Bruins who were not featured in NHL.com's projected lineup include Mason Lohrei ($3.2 million AAV), Henri Jokiharju ($3 million AAV), Alex Steeves ($1.63 million AAV), Mikey Eyssimont ($1.45 million AAV), Lukas Reichel ($950,000 AAV), and Jordan Harris ($850,000 AAV). That is a lot of cap space not being used in the Bruins' lineup, and it is apparent that Boston needs to move out some players because of it.
The Bruins can't be using that much cap space on players who are not guaranteed to be in their lineup on Opening Night. Because of this, it would not be surprising if they moved out Lohrei, Jokiharju, Steeves, or Eyssimont before the start of the season. They have too many similar NHL-caliber players, and keeping all of them will make it harder for them to afford to make a significant upgrade to their roster elsewhere.
The Bruins simply shouldn't be done making changes to their roster.
