The Boston Bruins have made a notable move, as the Original Six club has signed defenseman Mason Lohrei to a two-year, $6.4 million contract extension. Starting next season, the 6-foot-5 defenseman will carry a $3.2 million cap hit.
Lohrei, 24, was one of the Bruins' top pending restricted free agents this summer. Thus, getting him signed to a new contract was one of their top objectives of the off-season, and now that has come to fruition.
Lohrei appeared in 77 games this season with the Bruins, where he set new career highs with five goals, 28 assists, 33 points, and a minus-43 rating. Overall, the young blueliner had some rough moments this campaign but also showed promise with his offense from the point.
Lohrei is among the Bruins' most important young players as they continue their retool. The Louisiana native has the potential to blossom into an incredibly important part of the Bruins' blueline and will now look to do just that after earning this new bridge deal.
Lohrei was selected by the Bruins with the 58th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. In 118 games over two seasons with the Bruins, he has recorded nine goals, 37 assists, and 46 points.
