A former Boston Bruins forward is heading to Slovakia.
This is because former Bruins forward Gemel Smith has signed a one-year contract with HC Presov of Slovakia's Extraliga.
Smith signing in Slovakia comes after he spent the 2025-26 campaign for Grizzlys Wolfsburg of the German DEL, where he posted eight goals and 10 points in 19 games. Now, he will be looking to make a big impact with HC Presov after earning this one-year contract.
Smith last season in the NHL was during the 2021-22 season with the Detroit Red Wings. Since then, he has had stops in the AHL, KHL, and DEL. Now, he is joining his fourth league since then after signing with HC Presov.
The Bruins claimed Smith off waivers from the Dallas Stars during the 2018-19 season. In three games with Boston following this, he posted zero points, two hits, and a minus-3 rating. He would later be sent down to the AHL by Boston, where he recorded 16 goals, 24 assists, and 40 points in 47 games with the Providence Bruins. Overall, he was a solid offensive contributor during his time in Providence.
This would be Smith's lone season with the Bruins organization, as they did not tender him a qualifying offer during the 2019 NHL off-season. From here, he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
