Former Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk is heading to the Sabres.
After spending nearly three months on the free agent market, former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk has found his new home.
Grzelcyk has signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Buffalo Sabres.
The Sabres signing Grzelcyk comes after Sabres defensemen Mattias Samuelsson and Olen Zellweger got injured during Buffalo's pre-season. With this, it makes sense that the Sabres have brought in Grzelcyk on this low-risk one-year contract.
Grzelcyk will now provide Buffalo with more defensive depth and experience. With just an $850,000 cap hit, the former Bruins defenseman has the potential to be a good value addition for the Sabres.
Grzelcyk played last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he posted 12 assists and a minus-9 rating in 69 games. This was after he scored one goal and set career highs with 39 assists and 40 points in 82 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2024-25.
Before these two seasons, Grzelcyk played his first eight NHL seasons with the Bruins. In 445 games with the Black and Gold from 2016-17 to 2023-24, the 2012 third-round pick recorded 25 goals, 110 assists, 135 points, and a plus-137 rating.
