Will this former Bruins defenseman get signed by an NHL team before the start of the season?
While it is now late August, there are still many players on the free agent market looking for their next contracts. Among them is former Boston Bruins defenseman Derek Forbort.
Forbort still being a free agent comes after he was limited to only two games last season with the Vancouver Canucks due to injury. This was after he posted two goals, nine assists, 11 points, 45 penalty minutes, and 65 hits in 54 games with the Canucks during the 2024-25 season.
Given the injury trouble Forbort has gone through, he may need to settle for a professional tryout (PTO) agreement from a team if he is interested in continuing his NHL career. There could be some interest in him with this scenario, though, as he has had a solid career as a bottom-pairing shutdown defenseman.
It will be interesting to see if Forbort finds a new home before the start of the 2026-27 season from here.
Forbort spent three seasons with the Bruins from 2021-22 to 2023-24. In 165 games with the Black and Gold over that span, the 6-foot-4 defenseman recorded nine goals, 21 assists, 30 points, 253 blocks, 307 hits, and a plus-22 rating.
