Earlier this off-season, the Boston Bruins elected not to send forward Oliver Wahlstrom a qualifying offer. Because of this, the Maine native hit the market as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1.
Seeing the Bruins part ways with Wahlstrom was not necessarily surprising. After the Bruins claimed the 2018 first-round pick off waivers from the New York Islanders during the 2024-25 campaign, he struggled to make an impact. In 16 games with the Bruins, he posted one goal, one assist, 27 hits, and 28 penalty minutes. This was after he had two goals and two assists in 27 games with the Islanders in 2024-25 before being placed on waivers.
Due to his struggles, the Bruins placed Wahlstrom on waivers in February, and he finished the season down in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins after not being claimed by another team. In 19 regular-season games with Providence following this, he recorded nine goals and 15 points. He also had three goals and an assist in seven playoff games with the AHL squad.
Now, after his shaky 2024-25 season, Wahlstrom still remains a UFA with August almost here. Given his young age, a team out there could consider signing him to a professional tryout (PTO) for training camp or even a one-year deal if they feel that he can still be an NHL talent.
It will be fascinating to see what happens with Wahlstrom this off-season from here. In 236 career games over six seasons, he has recorded 37 goals, 73 points, 287 hits, and a minus-13 rating.
Bruins' David Pastrnak Did Something Special This Season
While the Boston Bruins had a disastrous 2024-25 season, David Pastrnak had himself another great year. In 82 games on the campaign, he recorded 43 goals, 63 assists, and 106 points. This included posting 19 goals and 46 points in the Bruins’ final 30 games of the season alone.
