Former Boston Bruins forward Ryan Spooner is calling it a career after spending each of the last several seasons overseas.
Spooner's most recent team, HK Dukla Trencin of the Slovak Extraliga, announced that the former Bruins forward is retiring from professional hockey.
Spooner retiring from hockey comes less than a month after he signed with HK Dukla Trencin. In five games with the Slovak club this campaign, the former Bruins forward recorded one goal, four points, and a minus-1 rating.
Spooner played overseas from 2019-20 to 2026-27, where he played in leagues like the KHL, Swiss National League, and Slovak Extraliga. He put up some strong numbers overseas, too. This included him posting 86 goals, 214 assists, and 300 points in 378 KHL games.
Spooner was selected by the Bruins in the second round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, 45th overall. From there, he spent each of his first six NHL seasons with the Bruins from 2012-13 to 2017-18. In 253 games with the Original Six club over that span, he posted 41 goals, 101 assists, and 142 points.
Spooner's time with the Bruins ended during the 2017-18 season when he was traded to the New York Rangers in the deal that brought Rick Nash to Boston. He also had very brief stints with the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks before heading overseas.
