NHL insider Chris Johnston provided an update on what the Bruins' plans for James Hagens could be.

Earlier this week, Boston Bruins top prospect James Hagens signed an amateur tryout (ATO) agreement with the Providence Bruins. While many expected the 19-year-old forward to sign an entry-level contract with Boston immediately, he will instead be down in Providence on this ATO for the time being.

During a recent episode of TSN Insider Trading, Chris Johnston discussed what the Bruins' potential plans could be with Hagens following him signing his ATO with Providence.

"Well, it's certainly possible," Johnston said about Hagens' chances of playing for Boston this season. "The Bruins haven't closed the door on that possibility, and I think that that's of note here. It's kind of a unique way to treat a top pick. Hagens was picked seventh overall, just had his NCAA season end. And by putting him on an amateur tryout, they get him in pro games in Providence, get a chance to get him up to speed. But they leave open the possibility that they will sign his entry-level contract this spring."

Johnston also added that if Hagens signs his entry-level contract with the Bruins, the first year of his deal will immediately begin due to his age.

"Because of his age, when he signs, that will burn a year right away. So, it’s not something that they’ll do lightly. But obviously, this is a player they think very highly of, and we could still see him play for the Bruins either at the end of this regular season or in the playoffs, depending on how that stint goes down in Providence," Johnston said.

With all of this, there is no question that the Bruins are facing a big decision with Hagens. However, if the 2025 first-round pick ends up shining with Providence, the Bruins very well could sign him to his entry-level deal. This is especially so when noting that their top nine could use more skill and offense as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.

Nevertheless, it is going to be very interesting to see what ends up happening with Hagens from here. In 34 games with Boston College, he had 23 goals, 47 points, and a plus-10 rating.
