Brad Marchand (two goals, one assist) and David Pastrnak (one goal, two assists) each scored three points for the Boston Bruins in a 4-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday to remain undefeated through four games.
Morgan Geekie scored the go-ahead goal, marking his first in a Bruins uniform, and Jeremy Swayman made 32 saves for Boston (4-0-0).
It was a milestone game for Kings captain Anze Kopitar, who played his 1,297th game with Los Angeles and broke the franchise’s all-time games played record, previously held by longtime teammate Dustin Brown.
Northland Wayne Gretzky Signature Series DealThe Bruins’ penalty kill went 5-for-6 on the night, and they were tested early after penalties against Charlie Coyle and Johnny Beecher just over a minute apart gave the Kings a 5-on-3 power play opportunity at 3:06 of the first period. Despite putting five shots on net throughout the duration of both penalties, the Kings couldn’t break through.
Pastrnak opened the scoring on the power play at 13:08 of the first period, receiving the puck at the top of the left circle with enough time to pick his spot and fire it top shelf. It marked his fifth goal of the season, which made him the first Bruins player to score in each of the team’s first four games since Dimitri Kvartalnov, who scored in each of the first five games in 1992-93.
Alex Laferriere scored his first NHL goal for Los Angeles to tie it 1-1 at 6:28 of the second period, cutting through the Bruins defense, picking up a stretch pass and powering the puck past Swayman.
Geekie put Boston ahead 2-1 at 14:45 of the second, punching it in after a sustained offensive zone possession.
Speaking of punching, Trent Frederic dropped the gloves with Kings defenseman Andreas Engund four seconds after Geekie’s goal. Less than a minute later, Marchand extended the lead to 3-1, firing from the slot and barely squeaking the puck past Kings goalie Cam Talbot.
The Kings started to lock down in the third period, and Boston failed to record a shot on goal for over 10 minutes (4:07-14:49), but the Kings failed to capitalize, and Marchand iced the game at 17:48, finishing off a backhanded feed from Pastrnak, who was behind the goal.
The Kings added a power-play goal from Carl Grundstrom at 18:48 for the 4-2 final.
