After spending the last two seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, former Boston Bruins defenseman Dmitry Orlov is on the move.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the San Jose Sharks have signed Orlov to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $6.5 million.
Orlov hit the market as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1 and was one of the top players still remaining. Now, he has found his new home with the Sharks and will look to be an impactful veteran in their lineup as they continue their rebuild.
Orlov, 33, posted six goals, 28 points, and a plus-16 rating in 76 games this past season with the Hurricanes. This was after he recorded six goals and 26 points in 82 games with the Hurricanes in 2023-24.
Orlov's time with the Bruins was brief but certainly memorable. Orlov thrived with the Bruins after being acquired from the Washington Capitals at the 2023 NHL trade deadline, posting four goals, 17 points, and a plus-10 rating in 23 regular-season games. He also recorded eight assists in seven playoff games for the Bruins in 2023. However, due to the Bruins' limited cap space that summer, they were unable to extend him that summer, and he signed with Carolina.
Overall, this has the potential to be a good move for the Sharks. They landed a true top-four defenseman in Orlov, who provides a bit of everything from the point. Meanwhile, Orlov has gotten himself another nice payday in the process, so it is a win for him as well.
