Will Matthew Poitras break out for the Bruins next season?
The Boston Bruins had multiple players break out for them during the 2025-26 season. Fraser Minten, Marat Khusnutdinov, and Jonathan Aspirot were among them.
However, one notable Bruins prospect did not have the same kind of success last season: Matthew Poitras.
Poitras was blocked from the NHL roster for the majority of last season. He appeared in just three games for Boston in 2025-26, but he did score a beautiful backhand goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning in their Stadium Series matchup.
Poitras spent the bulk of the 2025-26 season with the Providence Bruins, though. In 69 games last season for Providence, he recorded 13 goals and 44 points. This was after he had 17 goals and 41 points in just 40 games for Providence in 2024-25. With this, his pace of production slowed down a bit with the AHL club last season.
With how last campaign went for Poitras, it is clear that he is entering a make-or-break campaign. The 22-year-old forward will be looking to take that next step with the Bruins in 2026-27. If not, his future with the Black and Gold will only look more murky.
While Poitras has had trouble cementing himself as a regular in Boston's lineup, the possibility of him changing that should not be ruled out. The young forward still has good upside, and there is reason to believe that he could emerge as a solid NHL player.
However, with the Bruins having a lot of players competing for spots on their roster, the 2022 second-round pick will need to have a strong training camp to make Boston's opening-night roster. It will be interesting to see how next season goes for the young forward from here. Yet, he still needs to sign his next contract, as he is a restricted free agent.
