The Bruins have made some solid moves this summer, but they shouldn't be done yet.
The Boston Bruins have a pretty busy start to their off-season. They most notably acquired winger JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth to give their top six a boost. They also brought in two new defensemen, Will Borgen and Connor Clifton, to improve their depth on the right side. They also opened the door for Michael DiPietro to make their NHL roster by trading Joonas Korpisalo to the New York Rangers.
However, when looking at the Bruins' roster, it is clear that they should not be satisfied with their off-season. There are still some notable red flags when it comes to the Bruins' roster.
For starters, the Bruins could certainly use another top-six winger even after adding Peterka. They notably lost Viktor Arvidsson through free agency, so it would be wise for the Bruins to improve their right wing position. This would allow the Bruins to move a player like Casey Mittelstadt to their third line, assuming he stays put.
The Bruins also have some serious work to do when it comes to their blueline. They have too many NHL-caliber defensemen, and it would be smart for them to try to trade at least one of them before the start of the season. Mason Lohrei and Henri Jokiharju are two specific blueliners who would make sense for the Bruins to dangle as trade chips to improve their roster elsewhere.
Adding a first-line center is, of course, another huge need for the Bruins. However, this year's UFA market did not offer any true top-six centers, and the trade market is rather slim at this stage of the summer. Thus, this is a roster need that Boston could need to address during the season.
Ultimately, the Bruins have more work to do for this to be considered a successful off-season. It will be interesting to see what other moves the Bruins have in store, but it would be surprising if they are done. Adding another high-impact forward should be their top priority.
