Jake DeBrusk and Charlie Coyle were The Hockey News picks for the mid-season Selke Trophy. After losing several notable players last offseason, the Boston Bruins were expected by many to take a serious step back in 2023-24. However, they instead were once again one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, finishing with a 47-20-15 record and 109 points. A significant reason for the Bruins' success this past season was because multiple of their players exceeded expectations. Among the most notable was Morgan Geekie. The Bruins signed Geekie to a two-year, $4 million contract during the 2023 NHL Offseason after the Seattle Kraken elected not to give him a qualifying offer. This is a decision that the Kraken must feel some regret over, as Geekie took a big step forward in 2023-24. In 76 games, the 6-foot-3 center recorded new career highs with 17 goals, 22 assists, 39 points, and 137 hits. At just 26 years old, there is still time for him to take another step forward. Geekie also has the potential to have a more significant role next season. With the departures of Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen this summer, the second-line right wing spot is up for grabs. Geekie is viewed as among the Bruins' top candidates for the role. However, at a minimum, he should still be a crucial part of the Bruins' top nine. Nevertheless, after his impressive season, Geekie is a clear player to watch this upcoming campaign. The potential for him to at least hit the 20-goal and 45-point marks is there if he stays healthy.
