Whenever Team USA has played at the IIHF World Championships, a shutout has occurred. In their first two games against Denmark and Hungary, the Americans have outscored the opposition 11-0, but the tables were turned on Thursday, as Switzerland shutout the US 3-0.

Leonardo Genoni made 23 saves in the victory for Switzerland, moving the US to 2-1 in the tournament and into fourth place in Group B. Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson had no shots on goal in 14:38 of ice time in the game.

Other Sabres Stories

Shutouts seemed to be the theme of the day when it involved current or former Sabres, as Jack Eichel and the Vegas Golden Knights moved to within one game of elimination, losing 3-0 to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 4 of their second-round series. Vegas fell behind 2-0 in a pair of Adam Henrique goals, and extended their lead on a tally from former Sabre Evander Kane.

In the other series in action on Monday, ex-Sabre Taylor Hall scored the game-winner midway through the third period in Carolina’s 5-2 win over Washington. The Hurricanes lead 3-1, and the Capitals face elimination on Thursday.
