The Buffalo Sabres are at the 20% mark of the regular season, have a 7-9-1 record, are struggling with inconsistency, and are surprisingly having trouble generating offense. These multitude of issues are something that head coach Don Granato believes can be solved with one word; compete.

Sabres Lose Third Straight In Winnipeg

"That's something we have not had in our game, and it's the only thing that's going to get us to where we need to be, is elevating our compete,” Granato said after the 3-2 loss to Winnipeg on Friday. “Obviously tonight, it wasn't enough, it was too late."

Granato was clearly not pleased with the effort the club was giving, trailing by two goals after two periods against the Jets, and communicated that to them during the second intermission.

"I had a message for them that was unlike the normal message you'd get after a period,” Granato said. “I liked the way they responded, but it's not what I say. There's guys in that room they know they can do more. It is all about elevating compete, and I think we've been waiting and waiting. They're not realizing that we haven't elevated to the level we need to. We will solve a lot of problems. When you have challenges in different and multiple areas, they're usually resolved with greater compete."

Buffalo with their third straight loss now trails Boston by 11 points for top spot in the Atlantic Division and third place Toronto by five points.
