The Buffalo Sabres are currently at the top of the Atlantic Division standings with a 40-20-6 record and 86 points. With this, they are in a very good position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
There are many reasons for the Sabres' major turnaround this season. One of them has been the strong play of goaltenders Alex Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Due to this, the pair has received some big praise.
In a recent article for The Athletic, Jesse Granger ranked each NHL team's goalie tandems. The Sabres were among the top teams in Granger's rankings, as they were given the No. 5 spot.
When looking at the Sabres' goaltending this season, it makes sense that they are being ranked so highly. Lyon has been a home run of an addition, as he has an 18-8-3 record, a .914 save percentage, a 2.65 goals-against average, and two shutouts this season. Luukkonen, on the other hand, has a 15-7-2 record and a .905 save percentage. UPL has also had a .909 save percentage or better in four out of his last five appearances.
With this, there is no question that Lyon and Luukkonen have been very solid for the Sabres this season. If they continue to play this well for Buffalo, it would undoubtedly be huge for the Atlantic Division club.
