Ex-Miami(Ohio) bench boss was college teammate of GM Kevyn Adams
The Buffalo Sabres last week hired USHL head coach and former US National Team Development Program assistant Michael Leone as head coach of the AHL Rochester Americans, and on Monday the club continued to add to the organization with the hiring of former Miami (Ohio) head coach Chris Bergeron as a scout.
Lance Lysowski of the Buffalo News reported that the 53-year-old will join the Sabres scouting department under Jerry Forton to evaluate draft-eligible college player and undrafted free agents. Bergeron was a college teammate of Sabres GM Kevyn Adams during his freshman season at Miami(Ohio) before he was selected by the Boston Bruins in the first round in 1993. Bergeron played seven seasons in different levels of minor hockey before retiring in 2000 to become an assistant coach at his alma mater.
After serving as an assistant coach for 10 seasons, Bergeron was named head coach of Bowling Green University in 2010 and in nine seasons went 171-154-44 before returning to Miami(Ohio) as head coach in 2019. In five seasons, he went 35-116-16 and was fired in March.
