The NHL Draft is just over one week away and Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams and Assistant GM Jerry Forton indicated that they have an open mind regarding what to do with their top pick at #11 in Las Vegas on June 28th at Sphere.
"Pick #11 is a very valuable asset. We are going to get a good player if we stay in that position and make the pick, we're confident of that." Adams said. "I think you've taken all the information. where are you as an organization, what are your needs, where's your prospect pool…..if you are really thin in terms of your depth of prospects, and you're sitting at #11, that even makes it more challenging of making a move."
Adams believes that the Sabres are well-stocked with prospects, including first-rounders Jiri Kulich, Isak Rosen, Noah Ostlund, and Matthew Savoie, that would give them the freedom to swap their 2024 top pick for immediate help, and he has communicated that to other GM’s, but that does not mean he is minimizing the value of their pick or the possibility of them keeping the pick, trading up or trading down.
"We are wide open to consider anything... I've talked to every team around us that we're open to move up, which is not always easy to do but we have the assets to do that and we're very open to moving back, depending on (how) the draft slides and where guys are going." Adams said. "These conversations have been going on for a few weeks. They'll certainly pick up some new areas over the next week as we get closer to Vegas."
The Sabres are one of a number of clubs in the top half of the first round that may be open to moving their first. There has been chatter that Ottawa (7th overall), New Jersey (10th overall), Buffalo, and Philadelphia (12th overall) are open to a trade, but that will depend on what comes back in return before or on draft night.
