While the Buffalo Sabres are likely to trade some of their pending UFAs before the trade deadline passes, they also should not be afraid to add to their roster if it helps them beyond this season. Because of this, they have been linked to a few players over the last handful of weeks, including Logan Couture (San Jose Sharks), Scott Laughton (Philadelphia Flyers), and Pavel Buchnevich (St. Louis Blues).

An impactful veteran forward is something that the Sabres need and the Pittsburgh Penguins offer a quality one in winger Reilly Smith. The Penguins are listening to offers for the Mimico native, and Buffalo would be wise to enter the sweepstakes.

Smith would be a notable addition to the Sabres' middle six, as he still produces well offensively at this juncture of his career. Along with that, he would be a nice addition to their power play.

Smith would also give the Sabres a player with a plethora of playoff experience and a Stanley Cup on their resume. With the Sabres looking to break their playoff drought as soon as possible, bringing in someone who has played in over 100 playoff games would be worthwhile.

Smith, 32, would be more than a rental if acquired, as he is under contract until the end of next season, carrying a $5 million cap hit.

In 52 games this season, Smith has 10 goals to go along with 25 points.
